How To Train A Golden Retriever - Special Requirements

So you’re wondering if there is anything different or special about training a Golden Retriever?

Well Golden Retrievers (GR’s) do have their own little quirks and special needs. They are a great family dog and are generally very friendly with kids and adults alike. They don’t like to be alone and they are very active and require much attention, but all in all GR’s are great pets and like most dogs, with the proper training and care, they will become a valued member of your family unit.

You should start training your GR the minute you bring it home. First show him/her where their potty area is and then don’t change it. Keep going back to the same area over and over until it is routine for your GR. This routine is very important to the success of your dog’s potty training.

Find a place for your GR’s food and water dish and be sure to keep them in that same place if at all possible. Once your GR knows where to find water and food, they will always go to that place expecting to find it. Just like humans, dogs, and specifically GR’s want to know where they are going to sleep at night. They will go to bed much easier if they are familiar with the ‘den’ they are sleeping in.

All in all, the key to training Golden Retrievers is to make sure that you use routine. Train your dog the same way every time. Use the same commands, the same actions and the same rewards. GR’s love consistency and you will see over time that they become quite dependent on it and will quite often become unsettled if they are taken our of their routine. I currently have a 2 year old GR and she almost appears to question me if I change the way things work in our usual routines. She is obviously much happier when we do things the way she expects.
