As a manager or supervisor, you routinely have to handle difficult issues or interactions. You may have to give a negative evaluation, or be direct and autocratic in telling someone how to do their job, or talk to a subordinate who is angry and critical. In these and other sensitive situations, your choice of words can make an enormous difference in how your communication is received and even understood.

Words do indeed paint pictures. So, here are seven ordinary, everyday phrases that can be useful in these delicate situations:

I’m going back four and a half years now, when the bubble that had burst a while back from then was having hugely negative effects on the web design industry as a whole. Eventually, and in hindsight naturally, the web design agency I was working for collapsed under the weight of insufficient revenues, high staff costs and, worst of all, nearly a million dollars in unpaid debt from the telco part of the business.

This is a great sitting on the couch and watching TV recipe. You’ve got two kinds of chili, onion, cheese, sour cream and of course, corn chips.

1 (15oz.) can chili, no beans
1 (15 oz.) can chili with beans
3/4 cup water
2/3 cup of corn chips
1 cup onion, chopped
3/4 pound cheddar cheese, grated
1 (8 oz.) carton sour cream (optional)

Directions

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

Spray a 1 1/2-quart or 2-quart casserole dish with nonstick cooking spray.

In a saucepan, combine both cans of chili with water; heat to boiling; stirring occasionally.

To replace a defective inlet valve follow these instructions.
